Rethinking Innocent IV and the Crusades

“Rethinking Innocent IV and the Crusades” seeks to reassess the pontificate of Innocent IV (1243–1254) through academic discussion and debate. Long overshadowed by the more extensively studied pontificates of his predecessors, Innocent IV nonetheless presided over a period of profound transformation in the ideology, organisation, and geographical scope of crusading. We are very excited to host what is bound to be a fascinating, multi-disciplinary conference this September!

A Multi-Disciplinary Study

The conference aims to re-evaluate the historical significance of Innocent IV's papacy and its relationship to the crusade movement through rigorous research and scholarly dialogue. By bringing together academics from over 20 different institutions and over 19 countries, we hope to bring forward new ideas and avenues of study!

For any inquiries regarding the conference, please contact either:

Alessandro Scalone (Royal Holloway, IHR) - Alessandro.scalone.2018@live.rhul.ac.uk

Collette Firestone (Royal Holloway)- collette.firestone.2015@live.rhul.ac.uk

Our hybrid conference is designed to be accessible for all scholars, and we are excited to welcome both established academics and post-graduate researchers to our panels and discussions. Whether you already have expertise in Innocent IV and/or the crusades, or if you're just interested in learning more, we are confident this will be a valuable opportunity.
